1 Plan ahead
Any events that you will record, try to make the plan first. For example, if you want to record a birthday party event, then first make a list of pictures of what will be taken as follows :
- Decorative cake
- New guest arrives
- Welcome reception
- Show birthday cake
- Moment blowing candles and expressions of the guests
- Cake cutting
- Opening of the event
- Interview the guests
- Entertainment and dance (entertainment events)
- Guests are on their way home
2 Use a Tripod
While recording an image, use a tripod as much as possible. Although a bit time consuming in its settings, but using a tripod can produce a much better image. Tripod can help get a more stable and clean recordings. Imagine if no tripod will certainly be seen wobble and movement that does not
focus on your recordings. With a tripod you can easily shift the camera to do a smoother recording.
3 Opening Image (Opening Establishing Shot)
Usually describes the location where the shooting will take place. For example taking pictures at a party outside the room, then we can choose the page where the party is held as an opening image.
4 Shoot Close
The more background distraction displayed on the image, the more the image becomes unattractive. There are four types of shot used in videography: wide, medium, close-up, and extreme close-up. Consider the following picture example.
5 Shoot Cutaway Shot
Most videos usually use what is called a cutaway shot. Cutaway shot is a snippet of images associated with the main image. For example, when taking a picture of a birthday party, you will usually show a picture of a person blowing a candle and cutting his cake, but on the other hand you also feature a cutaway shot of the face and the expression of the guests who are singing while clapping. Other examples like the following picture.
6 Shoot Wide then Close
Almost the same as a cutaway shot, for example when you show a picture of a girl who is opening the whole prize, then displaying a picture closely to the girl's hand opening the gift, this adds a dramatic impression to the picture. This technique is called shoot wide then close.
7 Change the Angle and Position
Try taking pictures from angles and different positions. If you take every picture from the same angle or position, it will make the audience feel bored. Try another angle to make the recording look more interesting.
8 Shoot to Edit
Whether to make edits or not to the image after shooting, try to keep editing in your camera (in-camera editing). For example, on your camcorder there may be a fade-in and fade-out mode that can make the image cleaner and more attractive, so you can use that mode instantly when shooting.
If you're not planning on editing a shooting result, make sure you've determined at the beginning of how long the duration of the video you want. Suppose you want to record a birthday party event, make your video with a duration of about 15-30 minutes even though the event lasts two hours because the audience will not watch a two-hour birthday party show. Keep in mind, Hollywood movies last no longer than 90 minutes. So plan carefully and make sure that every shoot that will be done aims according to plan in advance. Your camera should also be able to know the time of each shoot.
9 Sound Check and Recording
While recording, do not forget to check the sound level on the camera. If the audio settings in your camera are set manually, make sure to check the audio levels are not too high or low. If needed, use headphones to monitor the audio levels on your camera to make it more clear.
10 Edit Your Recording Results
Edit your video using a nonlinear editor like Apple's iMovie, Windows Movie Maker, or Adobe Premiere Element that can make your production videos look better. In fact, a process is not as difficult as you think, it just takes a lot longer. By editing a movie, you can remove rocking image results, add transitions, background music, and titles to make your videos more engaging.
Good luck
