Here are tips on choosing an external flash for DSLR :
- Select flash with big GN
In the photography formula Guide number (GN) = distance (meters) × openings (f-number). The number of GN in flash is simply the amount of flash power. Surely the accuracy of its use is determined by the formulation of the use of aperture numbers, ISO and shutter speed. To be sure you do not need to be dizzying to understand thoroughly this formula. But a good flash is that has a large GN. Did you know that the average DSLR camera has an internal flash with a small GN ranging from 6 to 12. As for the external flash of course has a larger GN than internal flash. Generally the average until the number 35-80. Of course very good for shooting in dark place, choose flash with GN above 50.
- Flexible flash head
Actually almost every external flash has a head that can be rotated in a flexible, forward, to the right side, left, up even backward. But some flash light manufacturers also have flash products that are designed to be less flexible. The head can not be played alias fixed, or can be rotated but not limited to limited alias. There are many inexpensive external flash that has flexible heads. So before buying make sure you try to twist the head whether it is flexible. This function is usually to bounce or other lighting tricks.
- Slave features
The slave feature is often overlooked when this feature is important. Slave is a feature where if activated, then our external flash lights will respond light up when there is another flash that lights up. This capability is often used for strobist photos or other creative lighting. Very good when you do not have Trigger as a trigger. For example, you are capturing an object with an external flash not attached to the camera but activating the Slave and directing it to the object on the left. While your camera uses internal flash, so when pressed shutter, internal flash will automatically trigger an external flash on the left side of the object.
- TTL
Do you know about TTL? It stands for Trough The Lens, meaning that flash with TTL has the ability to automatically adjust the amount of light emitted when photographed. This kind of flash does the detection of exposure through the lens. Sophisticated is not it? You do not need to set and tinker with the level of flash, just take it. But flash with TTL features is quite expensive, reaching millions. The alternative is TTL flash Chinese products that are usually priced a bit more affordable.
