5 This Exercise Helps You Become a Better Photographer

Share:
Many people say, practice makes perfect, practice leads to perfection. Well, we will never be perfect photographers, but to be a better photographer would be the desire of many people.

The following types of exercises are easy to do but will make you more good at photographing:

1. Practice Using Spot Meter

Modern camera metering system is very sophisticated. The most commonly used metering system is evaluative, matrix or multi-area which would normally be very reliable under standard lighting conditions. But when we are faced with situations with very bright or very dark conditions or other tricky situations, this metering system will not work as expected.

For that we should master how to use spot meter camera. With the more frequent use of spot meters, we get used to and know exactly where to put metering points for specific subjects and certain light conditions. We will know how to read the tone of light before arranging the composition of the photo.

2. Practice Reading Histogram

All the light information in a photo can be seen quickly through the histogram. Fortunately you are shooting with a mirrorless camera equipped with an electronic viewfinder, because this type of camera can be set to display the histogram in the viewfinder so that it can know the histogram of the photo before even squeeze the shutter.

When facing light conditions are quite difficult, check the histogram of your photos. The histogram scale shows the photo light scale, from darkest (brightness = 0, left edge) to brightest (brightness = 255, right edge of histogram). The peak of the histogram shows the number of pixels with brightness according to scale and the high peak indicates many pixels with high description. Meaning: very dark photos will show left-leaning graphs while bright photos will lean to the right. Please see how to read the photo histogram here. Turn on also highlights warning photos on the camera to avoid photos lose detail due to over exposure, see how here.

3. Use Prime Lens Continuously

Wearing prime lenses, non zoom lenses that have only one focal length, make us more creative. If all this we live zoom-in or zoom-out lens, with prime lens we have to walk medial or away to obtain the composition we want. In addition to having to go through the process of thinking and moving to compose the composition when wearing prime lens, we also become familiar with the character and viewpoint of the lens, so that in a certain time we seemed to "blend in" with the lens view.

4. Practice Using Manual Mode

Although the Aperture and Shutter Priority modes are reliable enough in the majority of shooting situations, mastering the manual mode is one of the markers of a photographer's skill.

In addition to being understood inside with the camera's manual mode, the main function of practicing using manual mode is to improve the hand speed we change the parameters aperture-shutter speed and ISO. It takes practice and flying hours to be able to do this cycle quickly: hands do metering -> eye viewing camera metering -> hand changing aperture / shutter.

5. Make Commitment To Upload Photos Every Day

Make a commitment to upload one photo every day, either to facebook, twitter, flickr or instagram. That way, we will be spurred to continue to search for interesting subjects and experiments that have not been thought of before.
