How to Perform Focus and Recompose Techniques

Share:
The focus and recompose technique is one of the tricks that help the photographer to compose a good composition quickly but still able to adjust the focal point and get the right sharp space. Focus and recompose techniques are usually used when the attention center of the photo we want to place at the end of the frame, either in the right corner, top left or bottom.
Examples of photos like the above is the right time to use focus and recompose techniques.

The meaning of recompose?

In the photography term, recompose is to reorganize the photo composition. Okay, Cam-site love the example:

Let's create a cool fantasy model named Steve. When shooting Steve, you put the face of the Steve in the middle of the frame to easily lock the focus. But if the face of the Steve in the middle of the frame make the photo boring, we then want to put Steve's face in the top left corner. Remember rule of thirds rule?

This is called recompose. As an analogy: you set up the room a bit and then realized it was not satisfactory, then decided to rearrange the room to make it more comfortable.

Why recompose?

Why should recompose everything? Why not us from the beginning? Can not we put Budi's face right from the start in the corner as we wish?

Well, he can answer. But practically on the field, where the focal point of the camera is not as easy and as fast as it is moved. Moreover, try to observe the camera focal point example as seen in the DSLR camera viewfinder Nikon D5000 and Canon 70D below:

Viewfinder titik fokus dslr
We are "forced" to follow a fairly narrow focal area and do not cover the frame corners as we wish. We are "directed" by camera manufacturers to place Budi's face in a fairly narrow area within the frame viewfinder.

There will be a time lag when we need to move the focal point or change the focus mode when shooting fast or lose the good moment when Bob is grinning funny. Anyway, in any camera, the midpoint is the most accurate focal point and quickly locks the focus.

When in situations where the limb conditions are inadequate, in order to quickly get the focal point we often have to choose the center point of the most sensitive light.

So in many situations, focusing techniques then recompose is the quickest and most reliable option. When done correctly, this technique can help us shoot moments faster and stay focused sharply.

How to Perform Focus and Recompose Techniques

There are several ways to do this focus and recompose technique. These include:

A. With One Shot AF-S Mode or Single Servo AF-S

The easiest and quickest way is to choose Single Servo focus mode or One Shot or depending on your camera type, just choose the mode where the camera will lock the focus only when we press half the shutter button.

Place the focal point in the middle, point the camera to the subject of the photo, the key is focus by punching half the shutter button and make sure the focal point is blinking / or issuing a beep sound .. the focus beep is okay, then point to re-composition according to new taste then Press the shutter button wholeheartedly downwards.

This method is suitable for use when the model that you photo is not shiny and not much movement.

B. By using Autofocus Lock
The second way is to use the autofocus lock button available on all DSLR or mirrorless cameras. In Nikon marked AF-L / AE-L, in Canon marked mark asterisk ():
Button af l ae l nikon canon dslr

This button is designed to lock the focus while locking the light metering on the subject of the photo. How to use it is: lock focus by pressing the shutter button. After the focus is locked, without removing the half shutter, press the AE-L button or the asterisk button and then recompose the photo. The exposure size will not change and the focus will remain on the subject of the initial image.

C. With back-button focus technique or AF-ON button
Trick back button focus

The last and fastest way is to utilize AF-ON button, this way is often named with back button focusing technique.

But if you want repeated briefly, essentially with the AF-ON button we eliminate the step squeeze half the shutter button to find and lock the focus. Simply push the AF-ON button, then the camera will find and lock the focus and then to take our exposure live push button shutter wholeheartedly. In the article about AF-On / back button focus all has been reviewed and how to set it if in your camera there is no AF-ON button and also how to use it also already explained, so please read back.
