What is a prime lens or fixed lens? The prime lens is a lens that has only one focal length. Examples
of prime lenses are Canon 50mm f / 1.8 lens, Nikon 35mm f / 1.4G, Canon
EF 20mm f / 2.8 or Tamron 90mm f / 2.8 Macro lens.
All lenses that have only
one single focal length are called prime or fixed lenses, as opposed to
zoom lenses that have multiple focal length points. If the prime lens has only one focal length while the zoom lens has many focal lengths, then what are the advantages?
Some Features of Prime Lens
Some
of the properties below are a generalization, because there are certain
prime lenses that may be defective or indeed the quality is not as
expected or the price is more expensive. But the majority of prime lenses bear the following traits:
1. Size and Weight, prime lens has a small physical size, lighter and more compact. With
only a single focal length point, the prime lens does not have to have a
precise mechanical construction so the shape and size are more
efficient.
2. Quality, prime lenses tend to have excellent optical quality. Manufacturers make prime lenses and only have to focus on how to produce the best image quality in the focal length.

Price, prime lens is usually more affordable in price because it has a
construction and mechanism is more simple than the zoom lens. No moving element needed to zoom in aoat zoom out.
4. Quick lenses, prime lenses usually have a very large maximum aperture so as to collect a lot of light. This quality makes prime lens called fast lens because we can use high speed shutter when maximizing aperture. The wide aperture also makes the viewfinder brighter.

6. Zoom With Legs, prime lens spurs us to be creative. In the absence of a zoom feature, then we are forced to step foot and think harder when composing a photo. Many argue that this can spur our creativity when shooting.
